First I need to openly gush about how much I love my consultant. He is truly amazing. He is so supportive and understanding. He listens to you the patient and doesn't blind you with medical jargon. And most importantly he hasn't once questioned my decision to opt for the cancer prevention surgery, unlike other consultants I have seen.
We sat for nearly an hour discussing everything, the procedure, the recovery, the possible complications....he answered every question on my very long list and promised to do all he can to give me the best new boobs possible :)
As always the bit where I have to get the girls out and be measured is a little cringeworthy but it was nice to know they haven't drooped any lower in the past 4 months. He took pictures so once I have my new amazing pair I can look at the old ones and feel fab.
It was when he got his diary out to set the date for my double mastectomy and reconstruction that I started to feel emotional and have a little cry. Not out of saddness or fear but out of joy and relief. 2 years of worrying and wanting to be at this stage and I'm finally here. Finally at (hopefully) the last hurdle to do all I can to protect myself against this bloody gene and the havoc it can wreak. Wednesday 18th September.....OP DAY!!!!!! Just 3 months to wait and as odd as it may sound I am so excited. Cannot wait to have the old girls removed and cut my risk of breast cancer from 80% down to under 5% - in your face BRCA1!!!!!!!
